Melrose Rugby Bulletin 6/3/25

Hello there –

Hope you are having a good week so far? We certainly had some great rugby over the weekend, which started with quite the win for the Storm against Gala Reivers, it certainly kept Grant busy on the scoreboard & microphone! The win meant the Storm took the Border Junior League Cup which was a great achievement, Congratulations to all the boys who have taken part and a huge thank you to their supporters & sponsors. To view some photos please CLICK HERE.

Saturday was a very busy day at the club! The U18’s did well in their triangular tournament against Peebles & Merchiston & the U16’s had a good match against visiting side, Preston Grasshoppers, who arrived in the smartest double decker coach I’ve ever seen! There was a huge group of supporters with them and they were on a bit a of a whirlwind trip! Luckily they managed to leave Melrose; it wasn’t looking good at one point as their fully loaded bus couldn’t get through St Mary’s Road, so they had to reverse all the way back – great skills from the coach driver! They then headed to Glasgow for the Warriors game and were playing in Newcastle on Sunday!

A shout out to the volunteers who cooked up around 150 pie & beans for our players & the visitors on Saturday afternoon!

At 3pm the 1XV took to the park – it was a tougher game than the score implies and it was great to get the win – to read Iain’s match report please CLICK HERE . The Offside Line Man of the Match was Al Ferrie – Congrats to him – Al also made it into the Off-side line’s Dream Team of the Week! CLICK HERE to read more.

This week’s rugby

We’ve got no 1XV action this weekend, but the U16s take on Berwick at 11am on the 3G and the U18s follow on at 12.30pm when they take on Alnwick. The U15s, 14s & 13s are all at Musselburgh on Saturday.

We’ve got an exciting night on Tuesday as we welcome the St. Paul Jazz Pigs from St Paul, Minnesota who are on a 50th anniversary tour. The Storm will kick off against the Jazz Pigs at 7:30pm, so rather than Friday night under the lights, it’s ‘Tuesday Night Under the Lights’! #internationalrugby. If you’d like to learn a little more about the ‘pigs,’ CLICK HEREit would be great to get a good crowd in the stand, so put it in your diaries!!

Vintage Kit Appeal

To help raise some funds for the club we’re looking to have a kit sale! So, if you have any old/retro/vintage/interesting kit hanging about that you no longer need, we’d be delighted to relieve you of it, and put it to good use! Just drop it into the office when you’re passing!

Charity Donation

The club were delighted to present Kathy Weir on behalf of @myname5doddie with a cheque for £6,060 that was raised at last year’s Farmers Lunch.

Doddie’s foundation remains one of the club’s main charity partners and we’d encourage everyone to do their bit to help find a cure for MND!

U18’s are heading to Rosslyn Park…

A note from the U18 Wasps….

The Melrose Wasps need your support! We have decided to enter the Rosslyn Park Sevens this year, the world’s largest schools Rugby Sevens tournament, with schools across the globe competing for the open.

As Melrose RFC are the originators of Rugby Sevens, we feel it is important to have our players representing the sport on the biggest stage, and for youth rugby, stages bigger than the Rosslyn Park Sevens come few and far between. This will be the first time a Melrose team has ever been to a Rosslyn Park tournament so it is particularly special.

We will be competing in the U18 Vase, which takes place on the 24-25th of March, so there is little time for us to fund our trip. However, we will be completing the Everest challenge, by walking up the Eildon hills 31 times in total, to surpass the height of Mount Everest.

We would greatly appreciate your help and support to get us to Rosslyn Park! Your donations would go towards transport and accommodation for our team. Any donation, big or small will make a massive difference to cover the costs. If you would like to help the Wasps get the London, you can donate to their gofundme appeal – please  CLICK HERE

That’s it for this week, hope to see you down at the club on Tuesday night!

Hilary
